   Happy and Holy 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time!  In just four short weeks we will enter the holy time of preparation for the birth of our Lord and Savior the start of the Advent Season.

   Today our parish school is having their first Open House where we are invited to give thanks to God for the blessing of Catholic education and hearing the good news of this great ministry in the Church and at our parish of St. Lawrence the Martyr.  As some of you know, I am a priest in the Diocese of San Jose because of our parish school.  I am sure I would have answered God’s call wherever I was, but it was teaching 6th grade here in Santa Clara where I answered the call and decided to study for the Diocese of San Jose.

   I would invite you to come and visit the school and especially if you have or know a family with a child or children of elementary school age to contact us and ask if Catholic education would be the right choice for you/their family.

   We are also about the celebrate the All Saints day and All Souls day Masses. Please see the parish schedule for the times of the Masses at St. Lawrence. The school (speaking of our Catholic faith) will be erecting a Day of the Dead (All Souls) altar in the Parish Center.  The tradition along with the All Souls Novena are expressions of our Catholic faith that affirm our belief if the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life at the same time recognizing our need for conversion and the praying for the dead and the souls in purgatory.  On a side note, you may want to read and reflect on St. Catherine of Genoa’s beautiful Treatise on Purgatory.

   Last but not least:  I have and I assume you have received your ballot for the upcoming election in November.  We, as a Church, are called to be leaven in the society by promoting peace, justice and life and seeking to make the best moral choices and decisions in each and every election.

   I have written and shared the wisdom of the Church concerning the dignity and preciousness of the gift of life from conception to natural death.  I would ask you to pray for the dignity of all life and to vote with a well formed conscious against Proposition 1 which would dangerously expand abortion in our state.

   Let us pray for life.

   ¡Feliz y bendecido Domingo XXX del Tiempo Ordinario! En tan solo ya, cuatro semanas, estaremos entrando al tiempo santo de preparación para el nacimiento de nuestro Señor y Salvador, el comienzo de la temporada de Adviento.

   Hoy nuestra escuela parroquial está teniendo su primera jornada de Puertas abiertas, donde estamos invitados a dar gracias a Dios por la bendición de la educación católica y escuchar las buenas nuevas de este gran ministerio en la Iglesia y en nuestra parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir. Como algunos de ustedes saben, soy sacerdote en la Diócesis de San José gracias a nuestra escuela parroquial. Estoy seguro de que hubiera respondido al llamado de Dios dondequiera que estuviera, pero fue enseñando sexto grado aquí en Santa Clara, donde respondí al llamado y decidí estudiar para la diócesis de San José.

   Los invito a que vengan a visitar la escuela y, especialmente si tienen o conocen una familia con un niño o niños en edad de escuela primaria, que se comuniquen con nosotros y pregunten si la educación católica sería la mejor opción para usted o su familia.

   También estamos a punto de celebrar las Misas del día de Todos los Santos y del Día de los Difuntos. Consulte el programa de la parroquia para conocer los horarios de las misas. Y hablando de nuestra fe católica, la Escuela estará erigiendo un altar de muertos, en honor a los fieles difuntos en el Centro Parroquial. La tradición junto con la Novena de Todos los Santos son expresiones de nuestra fe católica que afirman nuestra firme creencia en la Resurrección y la promesa de la vida eterna, al mismo tiempo que reconocen nuestra necesidad de conversión y la oración por los muertos y las almas del purgatorio. Solo como comentario: Es posible que desee leer y reflexionar sobre el hermoso Tratado sobre el Purgatorio de Santa Catalina de Génova.

   Por último, pero no menos importante: tengo y asumo que ha recibido su boleta para las próximas elecciones en noviembre. Nosotros, como Iglesia, estamos llamados a ser levadura en la sociedad promoviendo la paz, la justicia y la vida y buscando tomar las mejores opciones y decisiones morales en todas y cada una de las elecciones.

   He escrito y compartido la sabiduría de la Iglesia sobre la dignidad y el valor del don de la vida desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. Les pediría que oren por la dignidad de toda vida y que voten con una conciencia bien formada en contra de la Proposición 1 que expandiría peligrosamente el aborto en nuestro estado.
