Happy 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time! This weekend is the West Coast Walk for Life. Many of our brothers and sisters from our parish and the western United States will have travelled to San Francisco to walk for the protection of life. We pray in a special way for the dignity of life from the moment of conception to natural death.
This teaching of the Church calls for us to pray for an end to abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty. It may at times seem like the singular focus of the pro-life movement is to end abortion, but we recognize the need to care for expectant mothers, families and protect those who are sick from the societal temptation to see life as a commodity and suffering and aging as a burden that needs to be eliminated. As our Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us, as did his predecessors, the elimination of the death penalty is a moral good where we seek to see the hope of life and the conversion of sinners, even those who seem beyond hope. God’s gift of life to each of us is the most precious gift given and to protect, respect and care for those around us is the true conversion of sharing life in the abundance of God’s generous love and grace.
Next Sunday, January 30th is the first day of Catholic Schools Week where we celebrate the blessing and gifts of Catholic schools throughout out country. St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish has a long and rich tradition of supporting Catholic schools and education. In fact, I may not be here as your pastor if not for Catholic schools and St. Lawrence the Martyr Elementary and Middle School.
In 1994, I was hired by Mrs. Priscilla Murphy and Fr. Warwick James to teach Sixth Grade. It was during my time here that I “finally” answered God’s call to my vocation to the priesthood. During my six years teaching at St. Lawrence my faith grew and was strengthen by the families of the school and the challenging questions the students posed in discovering God’s will in their lives.
While many things have changed over the past 22 years since my departure from and return to St. Lawrence the Martyr, the role of a parish school remains the same: to help families and students discover God’s blessings through a great education.

¡Feliz III domingo del Tiempo Ordinario! Este fin de semana es la Caminata por la Vida de la Costa Oeste. Muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas de nuestra parroquia y del oeste de los Estados Unidos han viajado a San Francisco para caminar por la protección de la vida. Oramos de manera especial por la dignidad de la vida desde el momento de la concepción hasta la muerte natural.
Esta enseñanza de la Iglesia nos llama a orar por el fin del aborto, la eutanasia y la pena de muerte. A veces puede parecer que el enfoque singular del movimiento pro-vida es terminar con el aborto, pero reconocemos la necesidad de cuidar a las mujeres embarazadas, a las familias y proteger a los que están enfermos de la tentación social de ver la vida como una mercancía y el sufrimiento y el envejecimiento como una carga que necesita ser eliminada. Como nos recuerda nuestro Santo Padre el Papa Francisco, al igual que sus predecesores, la eliminación de la pena de muerte es un bien moral en el que buscamos ver la esperanza de vida y la conversión de los pecadores, incluso de aquellos que parecen no tener esperanza. El regalo de la vida de Dios para cada uno de nosotros es el regalo más precioso dado. Y proteger, respetar y cuidar a los que nos rodean es la verdadera conversión de poder compartir la vida en la abundancia del amor generoso y la gracia de Dios.
El próximo domingo 30 de enero es el primer día de la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas donde celebramos la bendición y los dones de las escuelas católicas en todo el país. La parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir tiene una larga y rica tradición de apoyo a las escuelas y la educación católica. De hecho, es posible que no estuviera aquí como su párroco si no fuera por las escuelas católicas y la escuela primaria e intermedia de San Lorenzo.
En 1994 fui contratado por la Sra. Priscilla Murphy y el padre Warwick James para enseñar sexto grado. Fue durante mi tiempo aquí que “finalmente” respondí al llamado de Dios a mi vocación al sacerdocio. Durante mis seis años de enseñanza en san Lorenzo, mi fe creció y se fortaleció con las familias de la escuela y las preguntas desafiantes que plantearon los estudiantes para descubrir la voluntad de Dios en sus vidas.
Si bien muchas cosas han cambiado en los últimos 22 años desde mi partida y regreso a San Lorenzo, el papel de una escuela parroquial sigue siendo el mismo: Ayudar a familias y estudiantes a descubrir las bendiciones de Dios a través de una gran educación.
