Happy and Holy Ascension Sunday!  “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

This is a statement of our faith which we profess each week and proclaim to the whole world.  In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we are reminded: “So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.” Christ's body was glorified at the moment of his Resurrection, as proved by the new and supernatural properties it subsequently and permanently enjoys. But during the forty days when he eats and drinks familiarly with his disciples and teaches them about the kingdom, his glory remains veiled under the appearance of ordinary humanity. Jesus' final apparition ends with the irreversible entry of his humanity into divine glory, symbolized by the cloud and by heaven, where he is seated from that time forward at God's right hand. Only in a wholly exceptional and unique way would Jesus show himself to Paul "as to one untimely born", in a last apparition that established him as an apostle.” (CCC #659)

The “irreversible entry of his humanity into divine glory” is a reminder first of the promise he gave to his apostles and still offers to us today, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (Jn 14:3) The promise and reality that we are made for a greater blessing in the heavenly glory we are called to share. It is the fulfillment of the command Jesus gives to all Christians, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit.” (Mt 28:19)

As we look forward to the work of “Becoming a Eucharistic People,” we are challenged both to proclaim the good news on earth and look forward to the heavenly glory we are called to share with Jesus Christ.  The link between the two is always our participation in the Eucharist and how we are invited to share this blessing with others.

¡Feliz y Santo Domingo de la Ascensión de nuestro señor Jesucristo! “El Subió a los cielos y está sentado a la diestra del Padre”.

Esta es una declaración de nuestra fe que profesamos cada semana y proclamamos al mundo entero. En el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica se nos recuerda: “Con esto, el Señor Jesús, después de hablarles, fue elevado al Cielo y se sentó a la diestra de Dios”. El cuerpo de Cristo fue glorificado desde el instante de su Resurrección, como lo prueban las propiedades nuevas y sobrenaturales, de las que desde entonces su cuerpo disfruta para siempre. Pero durante los cuarenta días en que él come y bebe familiarmente con sus discípulos y les instruye sobre el reino, su gloria aún permanece velada bajo los rasgos de una humanidad ordinaria. La última aparición de Jesús termina con la entrada irreversible de su humanidad en la gloria divina, simbolizada por la nube y por el cielo, donde él se sienta para siempre a la derecha de Dios. Sólo de manera completamente excepcional y única, se muestra a Pablo “como un abortivo” en una última aparición que constituye a éste en apóstol”. (CIC N.º 659)

La “entrada irreversible de su humanidad en la gloria divina” es un recordatorio primero de la promesa que hizo a sus apóstoles y todavía nos ofrece hoy: “Y si me fuere y os preparare lugar, vendré otra vez y os llevaré a Estad conmigo para que vosotros también estéis donde yo estoy”. (Jn 14, 3) La promesa y realidad de que estamos hechos para mayor bendición en la gloria celestial que estamos llamados a compartir. Es el cumplimiento del mandato que Jesús da a todos los cristianos: “Por eso, vayan y hagan que todos los pueblos sean mis discípulos. Bautícenlos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo”. (Mt 28,19)

Mientras seguimos trabajando para poder “transformarnos en un pueblo eucarístico”, tenemos el desafío de proclamar las buenas nuevas en la tierra y esperamos la gloria celestial que estamos llamados a compartir con Jesucristo.

El enlace entre ambos, es siempre nuestra participación activa en la Eucaristía y ver cómo estamos invitados a compartir esta bendición con los demás.
