     Happy 3rd Sunday in Lent!  We continue our journey of fasting, prayer and almsgiving opening our hearts to the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts and minds into the greater service of God.

     As we see the horrific death and destruction in the Ukraine, we continue to offer our prayers of peace and justice.  The Catholic tradition of social justice has always sought out solutions that uphold the dignity of each person and the just solution to every conflict. “Blessed are the peacemakers, they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)  Three major elements in Catholic Social teaching are:

1. The search for the common good:  We find the common good when we see each person in the dignity of love. Where the rights of one person isn’t subsumed by or lifted above the rights of another.  We find this in reflection and prayer, in actions of hope and mercy in our lives and with others.  As the Bishops of the United States wrote in The Harvest of Justice, “We should never forget that peace is not something that we can ourselves as creatures do and can accomplish, but it is in the ultimate analysis a gift and a grace from God.”
2. The responsibility for the development of peace:  Pope St. John Paul II wrote to the importance of doing the hard work of building structures in our own lives and in the society at large where we all take responsibility for the fair and just distribution of the worlds goods and seeking to support those in need where violence and war often find space to grow.  This means walking with others were he reminds us, “For this to happen, a great effort must be made to enhance mutual understanding and knowledge, and to increase the sensitivity of consciences.”
3. The reality of human solidarity: We proclaim at each and every celebration of the Eucharist, “We are the Body of Christ.”  That is as St. Paul reminds us, “And if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if a part is honored, all the parts rejoice with it.” (1 Cor 12:26)  Our prayers and works of mercy unite us with those suffering in the Ukraine and in the many parts of the world where war and violence seek to destroy the solidarity of God’s love for each person.  Please pray for peace.

     I know many of you may have already donated to a charity caring for the displaced and refugees around the world. On the parish website there are links to organizations, such as Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to donate to help the refugees of the Ukraine.

     ¡Feliz tercer domingo de Cuaresma! Continuamos nuestro camino de ayuno, oración y limosna abriendo nuestros corazones al poder del Espíritu Santo para poder transformar nuestros corazones y mentes para el mayor servicio de Dios.

     Mientras vemos el horror de la muerte y la destrucción en Ucrania, continuamos ofreciendo nuestras oraciones por la paz y la justicia. La enseñanza católica en lo que se refiere a la Justicia Social siempre ha buscado soluciones que defiendan la dignidad de cada persona y la resolución justa de cada conflicto. “Bienaventurados los pacificadores, ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios”. (Mateo 5:9) Los tres principios más importantes de la Doctrina Social Católica son:

1. La búsqueda del Bien Común: Conseguimos el bien común cuando vemos a cada persona desde la dignidad del amor. Donde los derechos de una persona no están por debajo o por encima de los derechos de otra. Esto lo descubrimos a través de la reflexión y la oración, en las acciones de esperanza y misericordia en nuestra vida y con los demás. Como escribieron los obispos de los Estados Unidos en The Harvest of Justice: “Nunca debemos olvidar que la paz no es algo que nosotros mismos, como criaturas, podamos hacer o lograr, sino que es, en última instancia, un don y una gracia de Dios.”
2. La responsabilidad por el desarrollo de la paz: El Papa San Juan Pablo II, escribió sobre la importancia de hacer el arduo trabajo de construir estructuras en nuestras propias vidas y en la sociedad en general, donde todos asumimos la responsabilidad de la distribución razonable y justa de los bienes del mundo, buscando apoyar a los que más necesitan ahí donde la violencia y la guerra a menudo encuentran espacio para crecer. Esto significa caminar con los demás.  Y nos recuerda que para que esto suceda: “Se debe hacer un gran esfuerzo para mejorar el entendimiento y el conocimiento mutuo, y así aumentar la sensibilidad de las conciencias”.
3. La realidad de la solidaridad humana: Proclamamos en todas y cada una de las celebraciones de la Eucaristía: “Somos el Cuerpo de Cristo”. Como nos recuerda San Pablo: “Si una parte del cuerpo sufre, todas las partes sufren con ella; si una parte es honrada, todas las partes se regocijan con ella”. (1 Cor 12,26) Nuestras oraciones y obras de misericordia nos unen a los que sufren en Ucrania y en las muchas partes del mundo donde la guerra y la violencia buscan destruir la solidaridad del amor de Dios por cada persona.  ¡Por favor oren por la paz!

     Sé que muchos de ustedes ya han donado a alguna organización benéfica que se ocupa de los desplazados y refugiados de todo el mundo. En el sitio web de la parroquia hay enlaces de diferentes organizaciones, como Catholic Relief Services (CRS) para que pueda hacer un donativo y así  ayudar a los refugiados de Ucrania.
