Happy and Holy Ascension Sunday and the celebration of Mother’s Day!  The Ascension of Our Lord, 40 days after Easter, would normally be on a weekday (May 9th this year) but is now commonly celebrated on 7th Sunday of Easter: today.

As we hear in Mark’s Gospel today, Jesus’ last command to each of us, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16:15)

And on this Mother’s Day we honor those women who have in this very special and intimate way brought this good news into their family, neighborhood and community in the blessing of motherhood.

St. Gianna Beretta Molla, canonized in 2004, was a mother and pediatrician, she reminds us: “Look at the mothers who truly love their children: how many sacrifices they make for them. They are ready for everything, even to give their own blood so that their babies grow up good, healthy, and strong.” This is the sharing of the Gospel, where the care, protection and growth of life is shown in our love for one another, as our mothers have shown us.  We give thanks to all mothers who live this daily sacrifice.

St. Teresa Benedicta, a philosopher and Catholic convert, who as a Carmelite sister was murdered in Auschwitz in 1942.  She was canonized in 1998.  As a daughter she reminds us, “To be a mother is to nourish and protect true humanity and bring it to development.” We are all born to be saints, to be holy and focused on God’s divine will in our lives.  We are reminded how this holiness must be nourished in the home.  We give thanks to all mothers nourishing the next generation of saints.

Catherine Doherty, a social activist, born in Russia is not yet a saint.  As a mother and in her ministry of caring for the poor and marginalized she shares with us these words of blessing, “A home is not a dwelling built by hands. Rather it is built by love, by that unity, that oneness, that will make out of a hovel a place of joy and peace, because the tranquility of God’s order reigns in the heart of it.” It is not the building, but the love given, received and shared in life given by God.   We give thanks to all mothers who generously share the gift of life and love.

¡Feliz y Santo Domingo de la Ascensión y celebración del Día de la Madre! La Ascensión de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, 40 días después de Pascua, normalmente sería un día laborable (el 9 de mayo de este año), pero ahora se celebra comúnmente el séptimo domingo de Pascua: hoy.

Como escuchamos hoy en el Evangelio de Marcos, el último mandamiento de Jesús a cada uno de nosotros: "Id por todo el mundo y proclamad el evangelio a toda criatura". (Marcos 16:15)

Y en este Día de la Madre honramos a aquellas mujeres que de esta manera tan especial e íntima han traído esta buena noticia a su familia, vecindario y comunidad con la bendición de la maternidad.

Santa Gianna Beretta Molla, canonizada en 2004, fue madre y pediatra, nos recuerda: “Mirad a las madres que aman de verdad a sus hijos: cuántos sacrificios hacen por ellos. Están dispuestas a todo, incluso a donar su propia sangre para que sus bebés crezcan bien, sanos y fuertes”. Este es el compartir del Evangelio, donde el cuidado, la protección y el crecimiento de la vida se demuestran en el amor de unos por otros, como nos lo han mostrado nuestras madres. Damos gracias a todas las madres que viven este sacrificio diario.

Como hija, nos recuerda: “Ser madre es nutrir y proteger la verdadera humanidad y hacerla crecer”. Todos nacemos para ser santos, para ser santos y centrados en la voluntad divina de Dios en nuestras vidas. Se nos recuerda cómo se debe alimentar esta santidad en el hogar. Damos gracias a todas las madres que alimentan a la próxima generación de santos.

Catherine Doherty, activista social, nacida en Rusia, aún no es santa. Como madre y en su ministerio de atención a los pobres y marginados comparte con nosotros estas palabras de bendición: “Un hogar no es una vivienda construida con manos. Más bien se construye por el amor, por esa unidad, esa unicidad, que hará de una choza un lugar de alegría y paz, porque en su corazón reina la tranquilidad del orden de Dios”. No es el edificio, sino el amor dado, recibido y compartido en la vida dada por Dios. Damos gracias a todas las madres que comparten generosamente el regalo de la vida y el amor.
