Happy Pentecost Sunday….Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. Enkindle in them the fire of your love.  Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Amen.

This ancient prayer to the Holy Spirit is a reminder of how we are invited by God to seek the help of the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity.  The prayers inviting the Holy Spirit into our lives are everywhere and we hear these prayers in each and every Sacrament we celebrate from the Baptism of a small child to the Last Rites given before we are called to heaven.

As we pray the Mass we also hear the calling forth of the Holy Spirit upon the community gathered, the gifts brought forward and shared and in our sending forth into the world.

When I was a teenager and received the Sacrament of Confirmation where the gifts of the Holy Spirit are given and shared, if you had asked me at the time, I would have not understood or even worried about these mysterious gifts and most especially what to do with these gifts.  As I have grown in faith and knowledge of our Lord, I rely heavily on the gifts God so generously shares with us through the Holy Spirit.

Last week at our Basilica Cathedral of St. Joseph two men, Fr. Joseph Nguyen and Fr. Manuel Barrios, were ordained to the priesthood.  During the Rite of Ordination there is a point where each priest in attendance lays his hands on the heads of those being ordained as we sing and pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit upon these sons of the Church.  The Church in prayer calling upon the Holy Spirit in such a powerful way reminds us of how each of us, through Baptism, are invited to live in this Spirit of God’s abundant love.

Lastly…a thank you.  At Fr. Joseph’s first Mass, Fr. Angelbert in his homily reminded us of how we are each called to “ascend” to our proper vocation.  To allow the Holy Spirit to prepare us to move to where God invites us to be and become the saint we are made to be.  I thank the many hands that offered their time and talents in preparing the church, assisting at the Mass, set up and serving at the dinner and the numerous things I cannot list.  Thank you!

Feliz Domingo de Pentecostés…. Ven Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor. Envía Señor tu Espíritu y todo será creado y se renovará la faz de la tierra.  Amén.

Esta antigua oración al Espíritu Santo es un recordatorio de cómo Dios nos invita a buscar la ayuda de la Tercera Persona divina de la Santísima Trinidad. Las oraciones que invitan al Espíritu Santo a nuestras vidas están en todas partes y las escuchamos en todos y cada uno de los Sacramentos que celebramos, desde el Bautismo de un niño pequeño hasta los últimos ritos que se dan antes de ser llamados al cielo.

Mientras participamos en la Misa, también escuchamos el llamado que el Espíritu Santo hace a la Comunidad reunida, infundiendo sobre ella sus dones y gracias para que a su vez podamos transmitirlos a los demás.

Cuando era adolescente y recibí el Sacramento de la Confirmación, donde el Espíritu Santo nos da y comparte sus dones, si alguien me hubiera preguntado lo que recibí, no le habría podido explicar, porque no había entendido ni me había preocupado por estos misteriosos regalos, y mucho menos, qué podía hacer con ellos.  A medida que he crecido en la fe y el conocimiento de nuestro Señor, confío mucho en los dones que Dios tan generosamente comparte con nosotros a través del Espíritu Santo.

La semana pasada en nuestra Basílica Catedral de San José, dos hombres, el padre Joseph Nguyen y el padre Manuel Barrios fueron ordenados sacerdotes. Durante el Rito de la Ordenación hay un momento en el que cada sacerdote presente pone sus manos sobre la cabeza de los que están siendo ordenados, mientras cantamos y oramos para que el Espíritu Santo descienda sobre estos hijos de la Iglesia. - La Iglesia en oración invocando al Espíritu Santo de manera tan poderosa- nos recuerda cómo cada uno de nosotros, a través del Bautismo, estamos invitados a vivir en este Espíritu del amor abundante de Dios.

Por último… ¡Un agradecimiento a todos! En la primera Misa del padre Joseph, el padre Angelbert nos recordó en su homilía, cómo cada uno de nosotros estamos llamados a “ascender” a nuestra propia vocación. Permitir que el Espíritu Santo nos prepare para movernos a donde Dios nos invita a estar y convertirnos en esos santos que estamos llamados a ser. Agradezco a las muchas manos que ofrecieron su tiempo y talento en la preparación de la iglesia, asistiendo a la Misa, organizando y sirviendo en la cena, así como la infinidad de cosas que no puedo enumerar. ¡Gracias!
