"One hundred years of research confirms that all young people are at risk of losing ground academically over the summer months," says Ron Fairchild, Executive Director of the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University .
Grade Level Review: Help combat summer learning loss for children entering grades 1 – 5 by signing up today for our 5-week, grade level courses which review math and language arts (reading and writing) in a fun atmosphere.
Enrichment Courses: Intro to Middle School NEW: This year we are offering an introduction to Middle School. For students entering grade 6, changing from the single classroom in grade 5 into a departmentalized (subject specific) campus in Middle School can be challenging. This class will introduce the structure and study skills required to be successful in Middle School while reviewing math and language arts curriculum.
Student Study Skills This computer-based class focuses on study skills and time management for middle school students (students entering into grades 7 & 8). Computer programs such as Microsoft Office and Ultra Key (a typing program) are interwoven into the curriculum to enhance the study skills program. Remedial math facts and writing skills are also reinforced to keep those skills honed for the upcoming school year.
Creative Writing/Speech Arts This year we are offering a Creative Writing and Speech Arts combination enrichment class for children entering into grades 3 - 8. In the Creative Writing portion of the class, students will learn the elements of creative writing, how to recognize good writing and the wonder of words to express feelings and create an image. The Speech Arts portion of the class will include forms of public speaking and dramatic improvisations through literature.
Logic and Lego Robotics Join our exciting Logic and Robotics course for children entering middle school (students entering into grades 6-8). The Logic portion of the class will introduce basic problem solving techniques with the goal of strengthening critical thinking skills while working in a collaborative environment. The Robotics portion of the class will explore the basics of design and programming of Lego NXT mind storm robots. Students will have hands-on experience, including some scrimmages. *An additional $75 materials fee is required
