NEWS - week of 02-18-07 to 02-24-07 Social Concerns What a great present - a goat, a pig and a llama After all the issues raised in this column before Christmas on the excesses of consumerism and giving meaningless "stuff" as presents, what do my son and daughter--n-law do? - - - they go and give me a goat, a pig, and a llama! Actually, they did not give them directly to me (thank goodness!), they gave them in my name to Heifer International, a non-profit that then gives them to families (4 million families in 125 countries since 1944) who use them for food and income-producing farm animals to ultimately become self-sufficient through the sale of animal products. What a wonderful gift. The next time someone asks you "What do you want for Christmas?" (or your birthday, or Father's or Mother's Day) think of those who need to share in God's gifts more than you and think of Heifer International (www.heifer.com) - or the Susan Komen foundation, or Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services or the Diocesan Human Concerns Commission, or any of hundreds of other groups working to bring more compassion, love, and justice to our world. Then visualize the faces of the people who will ultimately receive your gifts and remember the words of Saint Mother Teresa: "When I look into the face of the poor I see the face of Jesus". This could change the way I see gift giving in the future - - I am already looking forward to "getting" a horse and some geese next year; how about you? Catechetical Ministry When you were baptized, made your First Communion, or got confirmed, the Holy Spirit gave you gifts to help you grow in your Catholic faith. Have you unwrapped them yet? Wisdom: This gift helps us stay focused on God's will and his plan for us. Understanding: Lets us grasp truths. It means seeing with the heart, not just the mind. Counsel: Also called "right judgment," counsel enables us to weigh all the alternatives to make the right choice. Fortitude: The ability to remain firm against all pressures. (Also called courage.) Knowledge: A person with knowledge sees more than one dimension of an issue to determine the right path. Piety: Helps us think of ourselves as children of God and be eager to serve him. Fear of the Lord: The wonder and awe God inspires encourages us to respect him and all his creations. Unwrapping these gifts means identifying and using them. Just don't forget to call on the Holy Spirit for guidance as you use them!

Social Concerns We read that a homeless count in Santa Clara County is projected to show that there are 7,600 homeless people with 4,500 of them living in the streets. Even though more shelters exist each year, the count is projected to be worse. And many of "us" don't even "see" "them". Have we "conditioned" ourselves to not see them? Do "we" take different paths to avoid seeing "them"? Do we support zoning laws -- and the politicians that create them, and the building interest lobbyists that "influence" the politicians who create them... do we actively support these laws, or simply passively do nothing and say nothing while "they" get squeezed out of "our" community. Are we quietly pleased when the homeless are periodically forced out of public parks. How do we justify this as "God's work"? --- or do we simply avoid asking the question? Is this what the Church means by the term "social sin"? Do we support relocating "them" so they don't "affect business?" Do we support condemnation procedures for older homes (occupied by people who pay less taxes, or are "economic burdens" to "our" community) or mobile home parks on El Camino (so we can replace them with tax-generating businesses). Is it survival of the fittest? - the economically and educationally "fittest". Do we strive to give educational advantages to "our" children? --- and does this come at the expense of "other" children who won't be able to afford living here in the future? It's very interesting to me that we use the term "Almighty dollar". Is it time to seriously reflect on just which God we are choosing to follow? Or have we "conditioned" ourselves to not seriously ask that question either? Reflection question for the week: If, a year from now, St. Lawrence could honestly say we did, or significantly contributed to, a decrease in homelessness, what would we have done differently from what we are doing now? - - - and who will have done it? Catechetical Ministryfrom now on you will be catching people.' When they brought their boats to the shore, They left everything and followed Him." (Luke 5:11) How often have we read or listened as this Scripture was proclaimed at Liturgy? For most of us the answer is many times. Every time I hear this invitation of Jesus to his Apostles I reflect on the radical response of Andrew, Peter, James, and John. This translation tells us they left "everything" and followed Jesus. The response of the Apostles is both fascinating and challenging. How could they leave their families and friends to follow this leader? There is no doubt that Jesus was a very radical preacher and teacher. He did not promise any compensation in this life. Most of us are tempted to ask why did these people say yes to Jesus? I believe that once they had truly encountered Jesus they could not refuse his request. Deep down in their hearts they had that spirit of adventure and idealism; they were ready to conquer the world for Jesus. As the reality of their ministry unfolded bringing forth the Reign of God was a new and different experience for them. Two thousand and seven years later, the call has not changed. Jesus looks deeply into our eyes and issues the very same invitation to each one of us, "Come follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people." Are we ready and willing to say "yes" to Jesus? What a wonderful way to live and to bring forth the Kingdom of God in our hearts, our homes, and in the various communities to which we belong. If we reflect prayerfully on the article in the Social Concerns section of this bulletin we will experience a change of heart towards those in real need in our community, those who do not have a place to call home. The reflection question is truly God's call to each one of us to bring forth the Reign of God in a real and concrete way during this year of 2007. How will we answer that call? Can we like the apostles go forth with a spirit of adventure to help those in need? We know that our God will never be outdone in generosity and we will be truly blessed. In St. Lawrence Catechetical Ministry we welcome all those who want to learn how to bring forth the Reign of God in their lives. We are only a phone call away. (408) 296-0208
